The two towns are an hour and a half apart. The night should sit where the next morning starts.
Choose Bhubaneswar when the flight lands after dark, or when Lingaraj, the caves and the city museums are the point of the day. A hotel near the airport or in the city centre saves a night drive to Puri.
Choose Puri when Jagannath darshan is the reason for the trip. Hotels near the temple suit an early gate. Beach hotels suit a slower afternoon and families who want the sand after the shrine. Senior citizens usually prefer the shorter walk, which means asking for a temple-side stay rather than a resort several kilometres down the coast.
A clean split for a first Odisha trip: one night in Bhubaneswar on arrival, two nights in Puri, and a morning departure from Puri to the airport after Konark or straight up NH16. Sleeping every night in one city and day-tripping the other works only if the group likes long car hours.
